Another Rant

I wish people understood the difference between 'vintage' and 'retro'.

Getting Ready for V&H on 3rd July

Well, I guess I should be sewing instead of updating my blog, but I had a very late night collecting someone from Gatwick so I'm a bit pooped this morning!

I have been beavering away but still not enough done! Here is a preview of some things that will be on our stall at the Vintage and Handmade Textile Fair. I am sharing the stall with Barbara who with me (Woo) makes up WooBarb. We often do fairs together as our work joints quite nicely plus it's not so nerve wracking if you are with someone!

We describe our work as 'Vintage with a Modern Twist'. We both use vintage fabrics in our work but we mix them with modern linens to make them look contemporary.

Of course there will be plenty of my bunnies and creatures there!

So - please do come along - details are here.

Small print - Bunny and Creature designs are copyright so please do not use the images without my permission or copy the designs. Many thanks!

Mass Made Hand Made - a rant.

I just want to have a wee bit of a moan.

There is a little something that's been bugging me for a while now.

It all started at The Country Living Fair in 2007. I had some things for sale with Made in Hastings and they had a brilliant stand there - in fact - I would go so far as to say that their stand was the best looking stand there.

As I wandered around, I was quite surprised by the number of stands that had 'handmade' stuff on - and by that I mean - mass produced and handmade in India or China for example. The more we wandered round the more it began to annoy me a bit. After all - as a craftsperson - who can compete with a tote bag handmade in India that is selling for £6? Not only that - these were not fairtrade - and even if they were - what sort of fairtrade can it be if the item is being sold for £6? I know it's all relative but even so...........

I got more and more annoyed about it and with the recent crafts explosion, every high street store is jumping on the band wagon.

For example Laura Ashley have a cushion that is appliqued with teacups. It's £28. Here. There are many talented craftspeople that make these things with love and skill and charge a similar price. Why buy one from Laura Ashley that 1000's of other people have got?.

I know I am probably preaching to the converted I know but please - seek out handmade by GENUINE craftspeople. Not the £5 on eBay ones, I mean people like myself or the lovely Jane at Snapdragon. Jane makes fantastic notebooks and all sorts of other things. Both Folksy and Etsy have lots of great stuff on them, and just a quick trawl of the internet can find you lots of wonderful handmade things.

Don't encourage the high street stores!!!!!!

Rant over.

Thanks for listening.
